Where so much of our society wrings their hands at the thought of toddlerhood, we need to be rubbing our hands together with delight that we get to spend our days with such amazing, vibrant little people. We need to match their zest for life with our own ZEST for this unique stage.

Toddlers get a bad rep. “Terrible” being only one descriptor of many. But we can’t buy into this, not even once ounce into it, if we are to serve our toddlers and the spirit of toddlerhood well.

We’re not here to ‘tame them’, to stamp out their toddlerness and get them to the next stage of development. We cannot see these crucial years as a storm to be weathered.

We have to see the magic in it, and shift from ‘taming’ to serving, from ‘curbing/managing/squashing’ to allowing and enjoying. This is what our toddlers deserve.

How we see toddlers will impact on how we respond to them. And this mindset doesn’t come from how our toddlers are, but from how we choose to view them.

Not ‘tricks’ up sleeves, but ‘tools’ from the heart

Our toddlers need to be able to be toddlers, and we need to be the adults worthy of companioning them as they go about their toddler ways, and their toddler days.

HOW WE ARE WITH TODDLERS CAN:
  • Stop them in their tracks, or SUPPORT them in their journey;
  • Hinder their exploration, or HELP it;
  • Prevent their growth, or PROMOTE it;
  • Pit us against them, or WITH them;
  • Squash their spirit, or NURTURE it.
