Start in the Heart, and stay there!

We like to say: Christmas starts in the heart.

It’s true - if we want to do more than just go through the motions for our children, we have to feel Christmassy, and really appreciate what it means for our little ones if we go beyond the quick-route, and give the season the specialness it deserves. 

We also have to make sure Christmas stays in our heart from our first action, to our last.

Whether we set up the space first, or sit down for a heart meeting, we get the Christmas ball rolling. It is the end of the year, and some people see that as a sign to wind down in energy and enthusiasm for giving it our all, but for us, it’s a wind-up time, go all-in time. From there, there are more steps to take - an environment to maintain, rituals to engage in, family events to attend, acts of kindness to perform with the children. Those too need our hearts-in. Right until the last child has left when we close our doors for Christmas, we need to be revved up with the Christmas spirit. 

It sounds like it could be a challenge - to pour energy in when we also have family commitments and long to-do-lists for our own seasonal celebrations.

And sure, there are moments of challenge. But on the whole, it is easy to keep our Christmassy-ness ‘on top’ when we are with the children.

Because their excitement and engagement in the season sparks our own. 

Their joy in our care-fully prepared environment lifts our heart as well as theirs.

Their excitement at engaging in rituals - either for the first time, or after a year gap - keeps us enthused.

Their shining eyes speak to us, their stories fill our ears, and their excitement reminds us of our own child-self, and what mattered to us then.

Grabbing hold of that helps us to keep going, and to keep offering a season that goes into the heart bank - theirs AND ours.
